WSC: Silesian of the Year 2024

The "Silesian of the Year" is a prestigious distinction awarded to individuals from Silesia who exceptionally promote Silesian culture, science, traditions, and entrepreneurship. This title honors individuals who have been widely recognized for their spectacular achievements or significant contributions, or for their lifelong efforts. The award emphasizes the laureates’ role in strengthening the identity and importance of Silesia and its impact on the development of Silesia and the world.

2018: Jiří Drahoš

A candidate for the presidency of the Czech Republic in 2018, born in Jablunkov in Cieszyn Silesia, actively emphasizes his Silesian roots. During his campaign, he often referred to the history and culture of the region. His moment of teaching Jan Kraus the Silesian dialect on Czech television became a symbol of openness to cultural diversity. He showed that Silesia is an integral part of Czech national identity.

2019: Olga Tokarczuk

Nobel Prize laureate in Literature for 2018, one of the most outstanding figures in contemporary literature. Born in Lower Silesia, her work reflects a deep interest in the cultural identity and history of Silesia. Novels such as The Books of Jacob and Primeval and Other Times have contributed to the international recognition of Silesian literature. The Nobel Prize highlighted the cultural richness of Silesia.

2020: Łukasz Kohut

A Member of the European Parliament from Upper Silesia, actively worked for the recognition of Silesians as an ethnic minority and for strengthening their position on the international stage. His speeches in the European Parliament brought attention to the aspirations of Silesian residents. He gained recognition as a spokesperson for cultural diversity in Europe.

2021: Lukas Podolski

Born in Gliwice, he returned to his roots in Silesia after finishing his international football career. By supporting the local football club Górnik Zabrze, he became a symbol of local patriotism. His engagement in developing youth football and organizing sports events promotes Silesia as a dynamic region.

2022: Ewa Farna

A renowned singer from Zaolzie, combines Polish, Czech, and Silesian elements in her music, promoting the region's culture in both countries. Her album UMAMI, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, demonstrates her artistic maturity. Farna is actively involved in charity work and emphasizes the importance of Silesian heritage.

2023: Wojciech Zaremba

Co-founder of OpenAI and one of the key creators of artificial intelligence, is an example of global success for a scientist from Silesia. His work on advanced language models and AI technologies gained international recognition, highlighting Silesia's contribution to technological innovation.
